Major Depression Symptoms

According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV), the criteria for a major depression episode is ‘experiencing 5 or more of the following symptoms during the same 2 week period that represent a change from previous functioning’. The 5 symptoms must include the first or second on this list:-

1. depressed mood most of the day
2. markedly diminished interest or pleasure
3. significant weight loss or addiction
4. insomnia or hypersomnia
5. panic attacks, IBS, migraine, incontinence, etc
6. fatigue or loss of energy
7. feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt
8. diminished ability to think or concentrate or indecisiveness
9. recurrent thoughts of death

Yet there are other symptoms that we may experience that all point to the debilitating
conditions of depression, anxiety and anger.

This is not a pleasant way to live! Where is the joy, the energy, the playfulness, the laughter?

All of these unpleasant symptoms that rob you of living life to the full are a direct result of you living in your primitive caveman part of your brain and not the phenomenal evolved part! The neurotransmitters and chemical reactions in your brain result in causing the feelings we associate with anger, anxiety and depression.

Your body is literally just feeding you back that you are engaging the wrong part of your brilliant brain. Our brain is the most complex known thing in our incredible, vast, complex universe. We pay a huge price for living in that primitive part of the brain.

Our primitive mind is essentially for our survival. Yet, unlike our evolved mind, it is not an intellect. It can only encourage us to repeat the data and patterns it has stored, even if they are detrimental to us. Therefore, even if we know (from our evolved mind) that our ‘comfort’ habit of over eating or of sticking our fingers down our throat, or drinking too much, or any of the above is not serving us, our primitive mind will keep nagging us to repeat that same pattern.

For example, everyone knows smoking is bad for them. It says so on all the packets. Yet a smoker’s primitive mind will store the data that they had 20 cigarettes yesterday and survived, so will encourage them to do the same today. It does not have the intellect to work out it is in fact killing them.

This is the reason we stay stuck, repeating all the behaviours and patterns that we wished we weren’t indulging in, and driving ourselves deeper into despair at our apparent inability to overcome them or just find a way forward.

Yet, the good news is it does not have to be this way!

There does, however, need to be an understanding that there isn’t a magic switch. Everyone suffering from depression or anxiety wants to feel better. Yet that is only their 10% conscious mind thinking this. It is really about what data is in their 90% subconscious mind as to the extent of underlying resistance. It essentially boils down to the depth of someone’s desire and willingness to overcome this that is the key to beating anxiety and depression.

This is not will-power. This is a willingness to let go of the old false beliefs and patterns stored in our deepest subconscious and the willingness to learn how to authentically live in our evolved, intellectual mind and then take the baby steps to do so. It isn’t rocket science. It’s just learning to engage the part of your brain that does best serve you in day to day life instead of the part that does not.

With enough willingness, intent and commitment, success is guaranteed.

You have just got unhelpful data held deeply in your subconscious that holds you back. Release this and feed in truthful positive data and you too can engage with the phenomenal part of your mind and see all these unpleasant symptoms disappear!
